Antique books scattered on a misty road - war cost transparency campaign image.

This is a short companion to today's cost-transparency letter - not a redo of Wednesday's House war-powers piece, and not a tanker chase.

What NBC reported Thursday

Nearly the entire Senate Democratic caucus - 46 senators, in a letter led by Michigan's Elissa Slotkin - asked Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth for a detailed accounting of Iran war costs, a real breakdown of the administration's $67 billion supplemental ask, and a spend report on roughly $34 billion already authorized in last year's tax-and-spending package. Sen. Fetterman declined to sign. (NBC News, Sep 17)

I did not co-sign that letter. I am not in the Senate yet. The standard still applies: if you start a war, you show the country the receipt.

Three tallies - attribute each

Do not invent one "true" total.

  • DoD Inspector General: about $33 billion as of June 30 - excludes facility repair and other costs; notes munitions strain. (NBC / IG)
  • CBO (Tuesday): about $38 billion, and concludes the conflict is helping drive inflation.
  • Hegseth (July hearing): about $37.5 billion.

Different cutoffs. Different scopes. Mid-thirties of billions either way - and Congress is still being asked for more with thin paper.

The ask looks like a shrug

NBC's reporting contrasts the supplemental: seven pages of vague lines versus historic supplementals that often ran 100-plus pages. Briefings and press access are also thinner than the early Iraq period the letter cites. Oversight is not a favor. It is the job.

Delaware's pocketbook

AAA state averages for September 18, 2026: Delaware regular $4.3707; Delaware diesel $6.3863; national regular $4.4687. (AAA) Forever-war premiums show up on the commute and the grocery truck while the ledger stays foggy.
